Northampton-based artist Emma Saul was trained in art and printmaking at Bath Spa University, graduating in 2002. Since then she has been creating a studio of works in both painting and printmaking and is constantly experimenting with new media, techniques and methods to keep her work vibrant, spontaneous and unexpected.

Etching and other forms of intaglio printmaking have been around since the 18th century but fell into decline in the 19th and 20th century. The last thirty years or so have seen a renewal of the old techiniques but this beautiful way of producing images never seems to get the recognition it deserves.

Emma says; "I love the whole process of etching which may, at times, be long and frustrating but which always produces results that have a depth and integrity that only comes with this process. Even so, I believe there is never a right or wrong way to produce an etching and I am learning new ways of working everyday. I love the fact that no matter how planned and well executed a plate is, the resulting image is always a wonderful surprise.

"My work is often about layers. Whether I am working in paint or printmaking the images are often many-layered, reflecting the land and seascapes that inspired them. I often come back to them again and again to rework them. I love the texture this creates in my work and some pieces have been built up to the point they are almost sculptural."

Emma has exhibited several times in Bath, York, Devizes and Northampton and is happy to open her studio locally. To find out more about any piece, please email
